REDEVELOPING OUR NEIGHBORHOODS/COMMUNITIES

Make water affordable for residents, churches and businesses by revisiting the already approved high rates for rainwater drainage fees scheduled to begin in 2018, and by auditing current rates

Stop many tax foreclosures of owner-occupied, unblocked street drains, already available that are currently use for other purposes, Our schools, libraries and 13th Congressional District can benefits

Increase public safety with more staffing to responds to calls, as well as improved staff retention policies in 13th congressional districts

In 13th congressional district should encourage the creation of more block clubs, and create club leaders to meet with Congressman monthly

In 13th congressional district should establishmandatory Affordable Housing within “revitalized neighborhoods,” with option to purchase homes through credit and debt counseling classes

In 13th congressional district should create a program to support transitioning the homeless to homes “Homeless to Homebound

ECONOMIC PROSPERITY

"Our economy must work equally for everyone. A slanted economy is fraud for everyone. See the great recession for details."

Small businesses are the lifeblood of the US economy. We must support policies that enhance the growth of small businesses, whether through tax breaks or incentives, ensuring that they can continue to hire new workers

Wages have stagnated while major corporations earn record profits and the stock market hits all-time highs. I support a minimum wage increase to $15. Every hard-working Michiganders working a 40-hour week deserves a living wage and should be able to support themselves while saving for the future

It is estimated that in the next decade, the US will need to fill 3.5 million skilled manufacturing jobs which is why I support job training initiatives, including tax incentives for employers, so small businesses can help students pursue careers in high-tech manufacturing

The combination of property, sales, state, and federal taxes make Michiganders one of the highest taxed states in the country. We need to cut waste, eliminate unneeded regulations and reform the tax code to reduce the burden on the middle class. I will work to eliminate tax breaks for special interests, like the carried interest loophole, and ban tax breaks for companies that ship U.S. jobs overseas

The 13th district needs to claim its rightful share of funding to provide the basis for a thriving domestic economy I’m fully committed to protecting and enhancing Social Security and Medicare for current and future generations to ensure our seniors are protected

EDUCATION

Create a global education curriculum to compete with students from around the world and include more college prep courses, personal finance courses, entrepreneurship classes, mentorship and externship opportunities

Renovate closed school buildings to provide extended neighborhood services open to the entire community (i.e. tutoring, sports, GED prep, college prep, financial aid, job searches, volunteer matches)

Teacher Pay

Research shows that the quality of a teacher in the classroom has the greatest impact on student learning over any other school-level factor; salaries play an important role in recruiting and retaining quality teachers

The average teacher salary in Michigan is nearly $10,000 less than average teacher pay nationwide. I feel that teacher pay in Michigan has to be competitive with other states and other fields of work in order to attract the best and the brightest to teach our children. No public school teacher should use their own money to purchase school supplies

Early Childhood Education

Currently, the Michigan’s pre-K program is not meeting demand despite its growth over the last two decades. Many school districts receive interest from more pre-K applicants than they can accommodate I will work to increase access to pre-K and further ensure all state-funded pre-K programs are high quality

Afterschool Programs

As a Michigan resident, I know first-hand the importance of providing support for students outside of school time, especially for low-income families

I believe that unsupervised time right after school puts children at greater risk of being involved in juvenile crime or becoming a victim of a crime. Access to affordable, high-quality afterschool programs also helps parents stay employed, and it helps their children do better in school

President Trump’s budget threatens to eliminate federal funding for afterschool programs, which would negatively hurt our Public School System in the near future. I will fight to get more federal dollars to protect afterschool programs

Graduation College

Students should be able to obtain or refinance loans with low, competitive interest rates and use income based repayment plans for payback. By 2020, it is estimated that 35 percent of job openings will require at least a bachelor’s degree and another 30 percent will require certifications or an associate degree

That’s why I support making it easier to transfer credits from community colleges to four-year universities, allowing a more affordable path for students to earn a bachelor’s degree. I advocate increasing the number and dollar amounts of Pell Grants available to lower-income students

HEALTHCARE ISSUES

Every resident who currently resides in the 13th district need access to enough healthcare facilities, including specialists, close to where policyholders live. Health care must be affordable, accessible and comprehensive

Healthcare must include access to necessary specialists, prescription drugs and preventative care, and should not be contingent upon a person’s income or employment status. It also requires insurers to maintain an updated provider directory and to notify policyholders when a doctor or hospital is dropped out of a network

Women have the right to make their own health care decisions in consultation with their physicians. They also have the right to birth control as part of their insurance. Additionally, pregnant women and patients with complex conditions under the law will be able to “stay with their doctors long enough to make a smooth transition - without getting charged extra"

Advancements in medicine mean that Americans are living longer than ever, and with those advancements comes a responsibility to maintain access to care

EQUALITY RIGHTS

I am strong supporter of comprehensive immigration reform. I believe Michigan’s reform should secure our border and create a path to citizenship for the more than 11 million undocumented immigrants who are already here, pursuing the American Dream for their families

I do not believe it is up to me to judge another’s morality or to enact laws to limit or deny another’s right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Quite the contrary, it will be my duty as your next 13th Congressman to work aggressively to the repeal of laws already limiting our civil rights, and to pass new laws to safeguard those rights

This includes the rights of women, minorities, the LGBT community, and other historically oppressed communities. I support a compassionate immigration policy that protects families and recognizes the positive contributions of the immigrant community to our society

Veterans Issues

The brave men and women of our military are among America’s greatest heroes. Individuals serving in the military come from all backgrounds and unite in a common goal to protect and defend the freedoms and values that make the United States like no other

After Service Employment

Military service is fundamentally a superior path to acquiring skills and mastery in a variety of fields. We must improve assistance with after service employment opportunities. We can do better

Federal Income Tax

Our veterans have served and sacrificed, it's honorable to stop asking for rebates on their federal incomes. I propose a federal tax exempt status for all active duty and retired personnel

The VA Backlog

To end the backlog, I propose we approve Medicare for All. These men and women have made enormous sacrifices for our country and their service should never be forgotten. I will introduce legislation to reform our broken VA system, and provide quality care to our servicemen and women so they are guaranteed the dignity and honor they’ve earned

I would also seek to ensure that such benefits extend to mental health and addiction care and counseling. Furthermore, I would drive legislation that would make it UNLAWFUL for a private medical care provider to deny care to a veteran merely because such would be paid for or reimbursed by the VA or any other governmental entity
